History and Evolution

Founded in Lausanne, Switzerland, by American missionaries Donald and Deyon Stephens, Mercy Ships acquired its first ship in 1978 with the goal of transforming it into a floating hospital. After four years of modernization, the vessel, renamed Anastasis, began operations in 1982, equipped with three operating rooms and a 40-bed hospital ward. In 2007, the organization introduced Africa Mercy, which at the time became the largest hospital ship in its fleet. Later, in 2022, the Global Mercy entered service, an even larger and more modern vessel, further enhancing the organization's capacity to provide high-quality medical care.

Notable Cases
In October 2024, Mercy Ships performed a life-changing eye surgery on Mamadou, a 7-year-old boy from Sierra Leone who was facing blindness due to bilateral cataracts. Thanks to the organization's intervention, Mamadou regained his sight, allowing him to reintegrate into his community and continue his education.
