Tiananmen Square: The fight for democracy continues
MORE IN THIS SECTION
Today marks the 25th Anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, when China's government rolled-out a bloody crackdown on protesters in support for democracy on June 4, 1989.
Fast forward 25 years later and the people of Beijing are still fighting for civil rights. For example, more than 50,000 people are currently detained without trial and representation, according to Amnesty International. Massive censorship of the internet and other media increased as well. With rapid economic growth, China continues to violate human rights.
Keeping things quiet
"Silence surrounds this anniversary. So, too, does repression. For the first time, activists trying to hold private commemorations have been detained," Louisa Lim, NPR reporter said.
To show support, the semi-democratic Hong Kong held a candle light vigil with thousands in attendance at Victoria Park.
"We understand the importance of fighting for democracy of China. Hong Kong is apart of China and nowadays, political reforms are opposed by the Communist Party, they are trying to elect a chief executive that only responds mainland China government" Activist, Renz Tse told VOA News.
