OP-ED: Trump or the exploitation of terrorism
MORE IN THIS SECTION
Oh yes, it’s all about him. The Orlando massacre, one of the most horrendous criminal acts in the history of the country, is important only because, according to Donald Trump’s sick mind, it validates his predictions.
“Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don't want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!” the presumptive Republican presidential candidate twitted on Sunday a few hours after the killing of 50 young people, half of them Puerto Ricans, by a murderous homophobe, wife beater and Isis sympathizer.
Not a word about the victims, no message of sympathy to their families and friends, nothing about the pain of the LGBTQ community. It is all about him, of course, Donald Trump, the narcissistic, creepy clown that has swallowed every vestige of decency and dignity the Republican Party had left. Not surprisingly he didn’t have any qualms about politicizing the tragedy even before the victims were identified.
Omar Marteen was a Muslim. And Trump did not waste any time in exploiting this fact for the most basic electoral motives by preaching his message of hate. His intention? To exacerbate the prejudices of his most ignorant and racist followers.
This amorphous blob of egotism and self-absorption who Republicans seem to have chosen as their standard bearer, repeated his call for a ban on all Muslims entering the United States. The fact that the killer, born in New York, was “a homegrown homophobe, a murderer. Not an immigrant, not a foreigner, but an American raised at home to hate, like too many others,” as Cuban-American writer Octavio Roca said, did not matter to Trump’s twisted mind.
But as Venezuelan playwright Pablo García Gámez wrote on his Facebook wall, “Hate is destructive. And so is ignorance. Isis does not represent Islamism the same way the ku klux klan does not represent Christianity.”
I didn’t find a most fitting way to end this column than by quoting this moving and powerful piece published by Latino Rebels, and written on Sunday by Puerto Rican journalist Susanne Ramírez de Arellano:
“Today a piece of our humanity has been torn asunder, has been ripped apart by hatred, ignorance and stupidity. I grieve for the fallen, but I also grieve for us, that must continue to live in a world plagued by intolerance. We must stand together and collectively say NO. No more, you will not win, I will not let you. I will not allow you to kill my sons and daughters, my brothers and sisters. I will not listen to your word filled with hate. I will not permit you to spew hatred on your campaign trail and then cry along with you when you say you are saddened by a monumental tragedy such as this.”
Amen.
