OP-ED: The Trump Effect Killing GOP Hopes
MORE IN THIS SECTION
Diplomatic it was not, but in an open letter to Donald Trump made public on Monday, U.S. Rep. Filemon Vela (D-TX) surely found a colorful way to express the feelings of millions of people.
“Mr. Trump, you’re a racist and you can take your border wall and shove it up your ass,” Vela wrote.
One can almost hear hundreds of thousands of Mexican-Americans (like Vela) as well as Mexican immigrants cheering in enthusiastic approval of the Texas politician’s words.
As a matter of fact, this was only one of several incidents last week pointing to a growing “enough is enough” consensus among voters, the media and even his own party about the shameless showman’s “shenanigans and stupidities”.
It was not a good week for the billionaire blowhard, whose hate-filled campaign seems to be rapidly imploding. The air of invincibility surrounding Trump after the primaries was only that, air, or better yet, hot air. The truth is that his implosion should not be surprising at all.
“It’s getting to be tiresome, and that’s a good thing. I am talking about would be President Donald Trump’s non-stop shenanigans and stupidities,” I wrote on May 20th. “Despite the media fascination with the arrogant showman, except for his Republican supporters, his opera buffa act is reaching the point of exhaustion.”
Yes, I know that tooting your own horn is not, let’s say, elegant. But, hey, after watching the Republican presumptive nominee begin to self-destroy these last few days, I can’t help myself.
That Trump is a racist was no secret, but the prejudices of the man who, sounding like a plantation owner, urged the crowd at a rally in California on Friday to "Look at my African-American over here," have become the object of much discussion —and worse, derision— in the press and social media.
Yet such a revealing Freudian slip, which didn’t earn him any sympathy from African-American voters, was far from being his worse bigotry-fueled misstep of the week.
There is also his accusation of Indiana-born Federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel of being a “hater.”
Trump has shamelessly used the judge’s Mexican heritage as an excuse to accuse him of having a conflict of interest.
“I’m building a wall, OK? I’m building a wall. ... He’s a member of a society where, you know, very pro-Mexico. And that’s fine. But I think he should recuse himself,” Trump said in a Friday interview with CNN’s Jack Tapper. The journalist asked him 23 times if that wasn’t racism and got 23 straight-faced negative responses.
No one is buying Trump’s bullying of the judge. Curiel became the target of his hateful attacks after ordering the unsealing of the defunct Trump University’s internal documents. These documents clearly expose the so called university as “just a scam”, in the words of New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
“It was really a bait-and- switch scheme,” Schneiderman added. “Thousands of people were bilked out of millions of dollars. We're going to get the money back for the thousands of people who were ripped off."
It wasn’t a good week for Trump, who managed to alienate even more Latinos and African-Americans. And it wasn’t a good week for the Republican Party, whose hopes for getting to the White House are being squashed by the blatant crassness, ignorance and plain racism of their presidential candidate.
No, for them it wasn’t a good week. But for the rest of us, it was really great.
