Movingly -- and correctly-- President Obama called for a world without nuclear weapons during his visit to Hiroshima last week. Although he did not apologize to Japan for the atomic bombs that killed tens of thousands of its people, he forcefully expressed that the world needs “a moral revolution” to guarantee such nuclear horror will never be repeated.

It was the kind of eloquent, well-crafted speech Obama is a master of. Yet, the fact that, according to the Pentagon, his administration has reduced the U.S. nuclear arsenal less than any other post-Cold War President, is yet another confirmation that Obama is not only a master orator, but also a gifted practitioner of that old dictum: “Do as I say, not as I do.”

And if someone knows this first hand, it is immigrants in this country.

“The system isn't working when 12 million people live in hiding, ……when communities are terrorized by ICE immigration raids -- when nursing mothers are torn from their babies, when children come home from school to find their parents missing, when people are detained without access to legal counsel,” candidate Obama famously told the National Council of La Raza back in 2008.

He would beautifully express his compassion for the plight of immigrant families many more times after he was elected, yet his administration went ahead to deport more people than any other President in history. As a result, hundreds of thousands of families have been tragically torn apart, their homes broken, their children left without their parents, dozens of their friends and relatives killed after being sent back.

Now, during Obama’s final months in office, he is still living up to his reputation as deporter in chief. Washington has launched still another round of deportations specifically targeting the mothers and children who, almost incredibly, managed to escape the runaway violence and abject poverty ravaging El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Since 2013, the Obama administration has ordered the deportation of more than 7,000 Central American children with no court hearing, and without regard for what awaits them in the countries they had fled from to save their lives.

As an investigation by the British newspaper The Guardian has shown, as many as 83 people deported to Central America were killed between January 2014 to October 2015. 

The “U.S. government,” concluded The Guardian, “is deporting undocumented immigrants back to Central America to face the imminent threat of violence, with several individuals being murdered just days or months after their return.”

How many more have perished since The Guardian investigation at the hands of murderous gangs, drug traffickers and corrupt authorities is anybody’s guess.

Outrageously enough, there are unconfirmed reports that seem to indicate raids have already started. According to these reports, ICE has been detaining women and children at their own homes in Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte and Homestead.

After having deported more than 2.5 million people since winning the Presidency in 2009, the President’s beautiful words smell of hypocrisy.
