Pretty it is not, but Donald Trump is the new face of the Republican Party. As a result, the Grand Old Party is not so grand anymore.

Yet the presumptive Republican presidential nominee deserves credit for achieving something that seemed impossible: He is attracting even worse supporters than the usual lot of greedy rich people, reactionaries and bigots we were used to see lining up behind the GOP.

Not surprisingly Nazis, neo-Nazis, proto-Nazis and all the rest of the repulsive white supremacist fauna, feeling empowered by Trump’s racist rhetoric, are crawling out of the woodwork to enthusiastically back him and his presidential aspirations.

First, it was David Duke, a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard who pledged his loyalty to the blowhard billionaire, proclaiming him, in a fit of almost sexual paroxysm, “our white knight, our advocate, our person.” 

Now, it is prominent white nationalist William Johnson, one of the leaders of something called the American Freedom Party, which, according to the Southern Poverty Law, “aims to deport immigrants and return the United States to white rule.”

“He is the real deal,” said Johnson who, incredibly enough, was listed as one of Trump’s delegates at the Republican National Convention. The outrage provoked by such designation made the mogul’s campaign take Johnson’s name off the list of delegates. It was all due to a “database error,” they said as way of explanation.

Trump and his people can deny it until they turn blue in the face, but the truth is out there for everybody to see: The former reality show star is no better than the bigots and racists that have declared their love for him.  After all, “the Donald” has proudly made of his hatred for immigrants, Muslims, women and the poor the centerpiece of his campaign.

Worrisome enough, his fascistoid views found enough sympathizers to make him the all but certain Republican presidential candidate, but they also have made him the most despised politician in recent memory by the majority of voters.

According to a new poll from Public Policy Polling, Trump is less popular with registered voters than head lice, traffic jams, root canals, jury duty and used-car salesmen. Of course, not all news was bad for the clownish candidate: Poll respondents had a somewhat higher opinion of him than of cockroaches and hemorrhoids.

It may sound funny, but the truth is that it is not a laughable matter. Actually this doesn’t bode well for candidate Trump or the Republican Party in a general election, even if Hillary Clinton, his likely Democratic opponent, is not exactly popular either.

Just think that it is estimated that, U.S. born Latinos and naturalized Latino immigrants add up to more than 4 million potential voters. Contrary to what Trump may think, Latinos are not fools, which means that they will never vote for someone who despises them, threatens to build a wall at the border and deport 11 million undocumented immigrants.

And without the support of at least 40% of the Latino electorate, the arrogant xenophobe who voters consider just a little bit less disgusting than cockroaches and hemorrhoids will never get to the White House.
