Disturbing new trend causes teenagers to self-mutilate

Students at the Bethel Middle School in Connecticut are participating in a disturbing new trend called the Eraser Challenge, where they literally erase skin.
In the challenge, students are using pencil erasers to rub their arms repeatedly following the alphabet and coming up with a word for each letter, by the time they get to Z, their skin is mutilated and they stop to compare injuries with other classmates.
According to Bethel Patch, school administrators sent a letter home to parents and guardians asking them to talk to their children about the hazardous game.
The letter was written by the school's principal, Derek Murharem.
"I want to make you aware of troubling 'activity' that teens across America are getting involved in. It is called the Eraser Challenge and to date, we have had a dozen Bethel Middle School students engage in this very unsafe activity," wrote Murharem.
"Please take the time to talk to your child about this to make sure they are not involved in this ridiculous and unsafe act."
According to the Huffington Post, Murharem spoke with Fox News Connecticut, and explained his concerns over possible infections caused by the challenge. "I found out that kids were sharing erasers, so as they broke skin, they were passing the eraser off to somebody else. Body fluids were being shared and that's a concern of mine," Murharem said.
Doris Murphy, a teacher at the school told WTNH-TV that students were also showing concern over their peers' injuries. "A couple of my girls had to come to me because kids were ending up with pretty severe wounds on their arms," Murphy said. "They're 13, 14 years old and what's cool takes over sometimes."
The challenge is not only at Bethel Middle School, but everywhere. The trend is popping up in schools across the county and there are dozens of videos on Youtube showing kids from numerous locations participating in the act.
