When we talk about radicalizations in transformation processes within the current government, the Devil is in the details.

Beyond the vociferations of hatred and racism that can be heard from the White House and its spokespeople, the gradual change of the offices that depend on the government is what should really call our attention.

An example of this is the change in the “About Us” of the US Citizenship Services in Immigration (USCIS), who was once defined as the agency that "secures America’s promise as a nation of immigrants by providing accurate and useful information to our customers, granting immigration and citizenship benefits, promoting an awareness and understanding of citizenship, and ensuring the integrity of our immigration system," and which is now presented as the office that "administers the nation’s lawful immigration system, safeguarding its integrity and promise by efficiently and fairly adjudicating requests for immigration benefits while protecting Americans, securing the homeland, and honoring our values."

The change was announced by the Director of the USCIS, L. Francis Cissna, through an internal statement to which The Intercept had access, assuring that the new description "clearly defines the agency’s role on our country’s lawful immigration system", emphasizing the disappearance of the term "customers "in the new wording. According to the director, "the use of that term leads to the erroneous belief that applicants and petitioners, rather than the American people, are whom we ultimately serve.”

According to one senior U.S. immigration official who spoke with The Intercept on condition of anonymity, that message "while it doesn’t expressly say it, it means that they aren’t customers, but aliens."
