In Donald Trump’s first advertising buy, he bought ads in four key battleground states including: Florida, North Carolina, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The $3.5 million in broadcast ads will run through August 29th and is Trump’s first media buy for the general election. The state with the highest spending is Florida at $1.3 million, followed by Pennsylvania at $790,000 ($530,000 in Philadelphia), North Carolina ($775,000), and Ohio ($675,000).

Despite investing in both television and digital online advertising, Trump is still trailing behind in these battleground states. According to BBC, Trump spent $18.5 million in July, while Clinton spent $38 million.

This television advertising buy comes shortly after an $8.4 million online advertising buy made to a digital marketing company in July. In contrast, Clinton spent a mere $132,500 on digital online advertising in the same month according to Bloomberg. Though Clinton is projected to spend more in the coming general election, she has yet to make as large of an investment.

The television ads are similar in tone to the online ads, specifically the one titled, “Two Americas: Immigration.” While the online banner ads simply read, “American Pride,” the online ads are more precise. The television ad specifically targets immigration, and further supports a major component of Trump’s campaign to this point, including “stronger borders,” where Trump has insisted he will build  a wall on the U.S. and Mexico border.

“In Hillary Clinton’s America, the system stays rigged against Americans. Syrian refugees flood in, illegal immigrants convicted of crimes get to stay, collecting social security benefits, skipping the line. Our border open, it’s more of the same, but worse” says the ad.

In the swing states where Latinos make up only 5-10% of the population, according to pew research,  the strong border rhetoric may not aid Trump in getting the advantage he needs in the polls.
