This decision would mark a milestone in the tradition of the Senate, since the unilateral blockade of a confirmation for the main court would lead to a confrontation that will transform the Senate.

While the Democrats' position will not prevent Gorsuch's confirmation, Republicans are expected to adopt the measure known as the "nuclear option": to change the traditional rules of the Senate to override the Democratic filibuster and sworn President Trump's nominee through a simple majority vote. Such confirmation is expected to happen on Friday, according to the New York Times.

The Nuclear Option could seriously alter the way the Senate operates, rooting bipartisanship in Supreme Court matters. Common predictions point to a serious turn towards the election of more ideological extremist judges if only a majority is required for confirmation.

At the moment the Senate carries out the vote on Judge Neil Gorsuch.
