Last Saturday, State Rep. Cruz was elected president of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators at the organization's annual conference, adding to an already extensive list of political appointments both inside and outside Philadelphia’s Latino community.

"This is a tremendous honor and an extreme privilege, and I could not be more ecstatic to hold this position and help guide the national discussion on Hispanic issues at the state level," Cruz said in a statement. "As the Hispanic population continues to grow in both Pennsylvania and around the country, we must bring forward issues that impact our Hispanic constituents, and there is no better time than now to formulate an aggressive strategy to achieve that."

Founded over 25 years ago, the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators represents the interests of Latino state legislators from all states, commonwealths and territories across the the U.S. — including Pennsylvania, where Cruz is joined by a handful of other Latino state representatives, including Rep. Leslie Acosta.

Cruz currently serves as vice president of the caucus, and will be moving up to the top rank beginning next year. He was elected to the House of Representatives in 2001, and has previously served in the United States Hispanic Leadership Conference and the National Association of Latino Elected Officials. On a local level, Cruz is one of faces behind Latinos United for Political Empowerment (LUPE). He is also the 7th Ward Leader in Philadelphia, which falls within his legislative district.

Looking forward, Cruz said he will focus on the housing, immigration, education and healthcare issues facing the community.

“...we need a strong voice of support and I look forward to offering that," he said. "I will work with the rest of the leadership team of Hispanic legislators from across the country and together, we can realize our shared goal of increasing the quality of life for all the Hispanic constituents we represent."
