August 3rd, 2022After sixth weeks of protests, demonstrators in Venezuela, led by the opposition to the populist government of Nicolas Maduro, have started responding to police’s tear gas attacks with excrements. They call them “poopootov cocktails” (Puputov cocktails): simply, glass bottles containing human excrement mixed with water.
According to El País, poop bombs are being used by protesters facing riot officers from the National Guard and the Bolivarian National Police on the streets of Caracas and other Venezuelan cities. They call it “La Marcha de la Mierda,” literally the Shit March.
The first Shit March started in Los Teques, the capital of Miranda state, just a few kilometers out of Caracas. After being pelted with excrement, several members of the National Guard were allegedly so disgusted that they vomited, as reported in El País.
The clashes came after six weeks of violent unrest in Venezuela, as the country faces the worst economic and social crisis in history, with high inflation and crime in the streets making normal life almost impossible. Almost two million Venezuelans have fled the country in the last years.
