In the Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, an unprecedented race led to an unprecedented victory.

On Tuesday, Pennsylvania voters chose Braddock Mayor John Fetterman as the Democratic candidate to run alongside Gov. Tom Wolf in the November general election, ousting incumbent Lt. Gov. Mike Stack. The results make Stack the first Pennsylvania lieutenant governor to lose a primary election since the office holder was first permitted to serve two terms in the position.

Fetterman won the unusually contentious five-way election with about 38 percent of the vote. Nina Ahmad, a former Philadelphia deputy mayor to Jim Kenney and latecomer in the race, scored second place with nearly 24 percent, followed by Chester County Commissioner Kathi Cozzone with about 19 percent. Stack, who is from Northeast Philadelphia, foundered with only less than 17 percent of the vote while Ray Sosa, a businessman from Montgomery County, earned about 4 percent.

While Stack's popularity began to suffer in 2017 over allegations that he and his wife verbally abused state employees that worked for the family, Fetterman's profile has been growing since a failed campaign for U.S. Senate in 2016 in which he earned nearly 20 percent of the vote as a relatively unknown candidate.

Fetterman and Gov. Wolf will run together as one ticket in November against Republican candidates Scott Wagner (governor) and Jeff Bartos (lieutenant governor).

For 12 years, Fetterman, who grew up in York, has served as the mayor of Braddock, a town just east of Pittsburgh that has lost 90 percent of its peak population due to deindustrialization. His efforts to revitalize the struggling community have drawn national attention. Fetterman’s wife, activist Gisele Barreto Fetterman, moved to the U.S. from Brazil with her family as a child and is a former Dreamer.

Meanwhile, in local Democratic primaries for U.S. Congress, incumbent Dwight Evans defeated political newcomer Kevin Johnson by more than 80 percent of the vote to solidify his spot as the candidate for Pennsylvania's 3rd District, which includes parts of Central, West, and Northwest Philadelphia. Evans will face off against Republican candidate Bryan Lieb in the general election.

In Pennsylvania's 2nd District, which is comprised of North and Northeast Philadelphia, incumbent Brendan Boyle defeated Michele Lawrence, a former Wells Fargo executive, for the Democratic nomination, earning about 65 percent of the vote. The Republican candidate for District 2 is David Torres.

Mary Gay Scanlon earned a victory with 29 percent of the vote in a messy 10-way Democratic primary in Pennsylvania's 5th District, which includes parts of South Philadelphia and Delaware County. Scanlon will face Republican Pearl Kim in November.
