The Mexican Foreign Ministry announced Monday that according to preliminary information from the country's consulate in San Antonio, Texas, four of the 10 people who died in the packed and overheated interior of a truck in that city were Mexican.

  The ministry said in a bulletin that, according to preliminary information provided by the consulate, 25 of the 39 people who were left inside a trailer of a truck in San Antonio, Texas, are of Mexican nationality.

  "Currently, based on data confirmed from interviews conducted by staff of the consulate and from contact with local authorities, it is reported that four of the 10 people who lost their lives are of Mexican nationality," it said.

  In addition, 29 people remain hospitalized, 21 of whom are Mexicans and two are of third country nationality, while the nationalities of the rest have not been identified.

  The ministry said that the consulate in San Antonio has taken the necessary actions to provide assistance as well as protection to the victims and relatives of the Mexicans who have been identified and that the consulate will continue to work closely with local and federal authorities to identify the nationality of all victims.

  "The government of Mexico reiterates its condolences to the families of the people who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident," the statement said, adding that "this information is preliminary and will be updated when more data are available."

  It was also reported on Monday that the driver of the truck in which the undocumented immigrants died from being locked up without ventilation inside has been charged in a federal complaint for the deaths of the 10 immigrants.

  The truck driver, identified as James Bradley, 60, from Clearwater, Florida, told police that he did not know that he was transporting immigrants until he was alerted by them banging against walls, so he opened the trailer and dozens of immigrants began to come outside.

  The incident took place early Jul. 23 in the parking lot of a Walmart store in San Antonio shortly after midnight, when police vehicles, ambulances and fire engines were alerted of the tragedy and rushed to the scene.
