Much has been rumored about the presidential candidates for 2020, in an almost organic impulse to make this presidency end once and for all.

Michelle Obama, former Vice President Joe Biden and even Oprah have been potential candidates in the public discourse. But what many anticipated, - especially after the failure of Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio during the 2016 campaign - has come true: there is a candidate who claims not only to represent the Democratic caucus, but Latinos in general.

We are talking about the former mayor of San Antonio, Julián Castro, a young political figure who made his appearance on the national scene when entering the list of potential Hillary Clinton running mates during 2016, and who has now reinforced his public profile when he was one of the guest speakers for the New Hampshire Young Democrats 2018 Granite Slate Awards Dinner last week, where he was touted as "a rising national star of the Democratic Party."

Although Castro had not made any public statement regarding his intentions to run for the presidential campaign, he stoked the rumors last August when he formed a Political Action Committee (PAC) under the title "Opportunity First".

In an interview with NBC, the young politician said his goal this year is "to help elect Democrats to win seats in state legislatures and to help the party win back the U.S. House majority."

For Castro, the immediate work is "to expand Democratic control at the state and federal level" in a country where Donald Trump sits in the White House.

"This guy is taking the country in the completely wrong direction and he's hurting people while he’s doing it," he said. "I have a completely different vision of the country and this seems like an important moment to turn things around."

But the work that remains to be done before launching a campaign program is arduous. As Castro explained to NBC during his interview, "It is not enough not to have Donald Trump. We need a positive vision for the future of the country," he said regarding a possible re-election of the current president. "I can assure that in 2020 the American people will be looking for a new generation of leadership."

When asked if this implies that his candidacy is a fact, Castro responded to CNN: "Yes, I am interested, but whether or not I end up doing it – I’ll decide later". The young politician said he will dedicate the next few months to "get across the country and listen to what folks are saying and get a sense of what people are thinking."

Julián Castro was born in 1974 in San Antonio (Texas) to Mexican parents and completed his law degree with honors at Stanford and Harvard universities between 1996 and 2000. At age 26 he became the youngest elected councilman in the history of San Antonio, and later in 2009 he also became the youngest mayor-elect in one of the main cities by population in the United States.

His political work has focused on the implementation of a vision of economic growth parallel to the improvement of the quality of life of its citizens. In addition, Castro has worked in community service with associations such as Family Services and has taught courses at the University of Texas.
