A Colombian opposition party on Wednesday asked the European Union to step in to demand the Colombian government implements the commitments stipulated in a peace agreement with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).

The main opposition party in Colombia, Colombia Humana, led by Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, sent a letter to the EU's Representative of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, accusing the Colombian president, Iván Duque, of slowing down a peace process brokered by the previous government.

Petro said in the letter that Duque had effectively put the breaks on the process and failed to follow through with the truth commission, a central element for the transition to peace, which involves acknowledging the victims of the FARC, having an open conversation about the events that unfolded during the Columbian armed conflict between 1964-2017 and the implementation of sanctions and punishments.

Petro added that without a truth commission peace would be impossible in Colombia.

The leader of the opposition also decried that another clause in the peace agreement that had been halted was the restitution and redistribution of land, previously controlled by the guerrillas, to farmers.

Of the 8 million hectares of land that were occupied by FARC rebel forces, only 4 percent have been returned to rural communities.

The opposition group staged a demonstration Wednesday outside the European Parliament and reminded EU lawmakers that the EU Trust Fund for Colombia required the full implementation of the clauses stipulated in the peace agreement.

The protest coincides with the Colombian president's visit to Brussels for an official meeting with Mogherini.
