In addition to the murdered officer, other people were injured in the attack, but law enforcement is yet to confirm how many. The Pentagon closed for more than an hour after the incident.
Austin has ordered the flag to be flown at half-mast at the Defense facility. He has also assured that the police officer died fulfilling his obligations:
"This fallen officer died in the line of duty, helping protect the tens of thousands of people who work in — and who visit — the Pentagon on a daily basis," he said.
The Department of Defense has also launched an investigation to determine the circumstances in which the stabbing occurred. The Pentagon's Forces Protection Agency confirms that it will give additional information about the police officer when the news of his passing has been relayed to relatives.
