Montgomery County Commission Chairman Josh Shapiro's bid for attorney general has been picking up steam.

He recently won the support of former Gov. Ed Rendell and current Gov. Tom Wolf. Then the incumbent Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced that she would not run for reelection, slimming the Democratic primary down to just three candidates. And on Thursday afternoon, he got a glowing endorsement from a group of 14 elected officials in Philadelphia.

The Democratic legislators represent all corners of the city: Council President Darrell Clarke; Sen. Vincent Hughes; Sen. Art Haywood; Sheriff (and former Rep.) Jewell Williams; Rep. Donna Bullock; Rep. Stephen Kinsey; Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown; Councilwoman Bill Greenlee; Councilwoman Helen Gym; Councilman Derek Green; Councilman Kenyatta Johnson; Councilman Curtis Jones; Councilwoman Maria Quiñones-Sánchez; Councilwoman Cherelle Parker; and former Councilwoman Marian Tasco.

Sharing praise and anecdotes, Sheriff Jewell Williams recalled how Shapiro stood up to divisive Republican Rep. Daryl Metcalfe in Harrisburg. Marian Tasco highlighted Shapiro's efforts to expand the definition of a hate crime in Pennsylvania to protect more vulnerable populations. Councilman Kenyatta Johnson applauded Shapiro's advocacy on the issue of youth gun violence, and also thanked him "retweeting one of my tweets" during Johnson's last political campaign.

After a few words of gratitude, Shapiro touched on a couple campaign promises, which included achieving greater diversity and integrity in the office of the state's highest prosecutors.

Shapiro briefly addressed the "crisis of confidence in our justice system," referring the endless "Porngate" email scandal. Shapiro said that his message has not changed since Kane dropped out of the race.

The southeastern PA voting block is key for a statewide victory. At one point, Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds Brown that "when women vote, Democrats win."

In the upcoming Democratic primary, Shapiro faces Northampton County DA John Morganelli and Allegheny County DA Stephen Zappalla.
