Obama launches bee task force
The White House's latest task force has taken on a mission to save bees — and the economy.
Which is scarier — bees or economic collapse? If you said the former, close your windows and sort out your priorities because the White House is taking action to save the bees and, in turn, U.S. agriculture.
The task force will be headed by the Secretary of Agriculture and the Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. Representatives from more than a dozen departments, including energy, education, transportation and defense will be charged with establishing research, action, education and partnerships between the government and private sector, all to save the honey bees.
The bee shortage, caused in part by pesticides and dwindling genetic diversity, could impact crops including fruits, vegetables and nuts. Many other crops, including coffee, limes and avocados, are already suffering losses due to disease and climate changes.
