The measure had been taken by the Ministry of Environment after receiving the concepts of experts, academics, former ministers and the recommendation of the National Technical Committee of Introduced Species.

This is one of the problems that originated the most famous narco of all times, Pablo Escobar, was the bringing of hippopotamuses to the country for his personal zoo, in 1981, today there are dozens of them, and in March they were already declared as an invasive species.

The species roam the Magdalena Medio and devastate the regional ecosystem, however, they were left helpless in the face of hunting.

"This is an important step to advance in an immediate action plan to address the situation generated by the presence of hippos, which have caused impacts on our ecosystems and key species," said the Ministry a few months ago.

On the other hand, Luis Domingo Gómez, the plaintiff, does not want to overturn the resolution. On the contrary, he asks that it be adjusted and that the species be recognized. As well as under the principle of animal protection, because it should be treated with respect, solidarity, compassion to prevent suffering, abuse and mistreatment.

"The declaration of a species as invasive implies, necessarily, that within the control measures, hunting is implemented to regulate the population for social, economic and ecological reasons", adds the plaintiff. And he reinforces his argument by explaining that, according to the regulations, hunting is an activity that "implies causing serious injuries and even death".
