The Pope mural breaks a Guinness world record
The mural which celebrates the historic visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia will be a project which breaks a record.
The mural which celebrates the historic visit of Pope Francis to Philadelphia was meant to be a gift from the community to the community. And thanks to the thousands of people who are collaborating on the mural, it will also a be a project which breaks a record.
The project, directed by Mexican artist César Viveros, will have its own place in the story of the Guinness World Records: the greatest number of people who have painted a mural in the same place.
The Philadelphia Convention Center, where the World Meeting of Families was hosted, is the place where these painting sessions have taken place. Around 2,280 people have participated in the sessions (as of Sept. 25 at 11.30 a.m.).
AL DÍA News spoke to Carlos Martínez Nogués, director of the Record Department for Latin America, and the person who came to the Philadelphia Convention Center to check all the documents required to credit the new record.
“All the people who have participated in the painting sessions have been registered. There were also at least two people controlling the whole process,” Martínez said.
The achievement is not official yet, because the rules of the organization state that the mural has to be completed and installed before the record can be officially recognized. But the number of people who have participated in Viveros’ mural outnumber the current record of the ‘painting by numbers’ technique (2,263 people). The record was achieved July 2014 in San Diego (Calif.).
The mural will be finished and installed at at St. Malachy School (1419 N 11th St.) by November according to Viveros’ team.
