Philadelphia is offering some love and looking for redemption after becoming the city where a hitchhiking robot couldn’t survive the night.

93.3 WMMR  station created a Papal Robot Hitchhiker, inspired by HitchBOT, a robot that after successfully travelling across Canada and parts of Europe, saw its U.S. tour came to an end after a rough night in Philly.

HitchBOT was designed by a team of Canadian researchers as a social experiment to explore the relationship between humans and technology.

Pope Bot debuted on the Preston and Steve Show on radio station WMMR on Monday:

“Hello, I’m Pope Bot. Inspired by my friend, #HitchBot, who sadly met his demise in Philadelphia, I am taking a journey around the Delaware Valley. The goal of my adventure is to prove to the Vatican that this area is a safe environment for the leader of the church. Plus, there is a prize each week for one person who gives me a lift!”

24 hours later, the Papal Robot Hitchhiker already visited Malvern (Pa), and stopped at Exton Square Mall, Plymouth Meeting Mall, Valley Forge, and Chestnut Hill.

"It's a test to see if the average person or people of Philadelphia are kind enough, gentle enough to treat Pope Bot with respect, and take it from place to place and have it be just fine," radio host Preston Elliot said.

Now, if you want to take Pope Bot for a ride there are some rules to consider. “Each person has a two-hour limit with Pope Bot, and then you must leave it in a safe place, sharing its location on social media using #PopeBotPhilly,” 6abc reported.
