In a recent petition introduced by 5th square, a local political action group in the city, the profits from 45 billboards placed in local lots across the city will go to a “slush fund” run by the Philadelphia Parking Authority.
The billboards - to be placed in neighborhoods such as Passyunk Square, Old City, Bella Vista, Chinatown, Washington Square West, and Spring Garden - will be a source of increased external revenue for PPA who reportedly earned $60,000 in revenue this year with 14 billboards in Center City garages, according to reports from PlanPhilly.
This increase in funds has caused concerns for the communities who are unsure where the funds will go though a spokesperson for the PPA, Martin O’Rourke, told PlanPhilly that “the funds would go directly to the “upkeep of the neighborhood lots, and that’s been happening for years. But ultimately it’s a decision the zoning board will make.”
