From Broad Street to Germantown Ave, Philadelphia is home to nearly 4,000 public art displays, which makes the city a vital source for artist lovers.

The number is only going to get bigger!

One event that combines exercise and art is On Art Run. On Saturday, April 23, 2022, the On Art Run, is asking residents from Philly and beyond to join a fun discovery of murals throughout the city.

Ran by its founder of the event and Mural Miles, Craig Oppenheimer, the group is joining Mural Arts Philadelphia, On Running, and Philadelphia Runner in an effort to showcase the memorable art surrounding the city.

Runners will be introduced to six murals along the run. The murals will be introduced to the runners and will lead a discussion on what each mural represents.

The event will also help local artists who created those murals, get a chance to talk about the story behind their art. They will also get the opportunity to discuss their journey on why they chose to become artists.

The warm up will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the official run will start at 9 a.m. The location will be at the Philly Run store in University City.

The run will be five miles, however, at the end of the relay, there will be a celebratory event including music, snacks, drinks, and free merchandise.

Oppenheimer said that combining art and exercise is a great way to get more people involved with one another.

"I think it's a great way to involve art lovers, runners, people who are just getting into running, people who are experienced runners and everyone in between," Oppenheimer said to Axios Philadelphia.

He also said that pet parents bring their animals along for the journey.

"We've had people on bikes, three dogs came on our last run,” he said.

Event coordinators are looking to have more than 60 people join in on Saturday.

The Mural Arts Program is also hosting another event on that same day for those who do not want to run or would rather walk instead. The event will begin at 2 p.m. and will also be a five-six mile walk.

Mural Miles is also hosting another event in June that will be located in Manayunk. The hidden gem, Manayunk is home to various art and artists. The organization also encourages aspiring artists to take advantage of these events, so they can see first hand the details of the murals in Philly.

Mural Arts Philadelphia was founded 36 years ago and serves a primary location for Philadelphia arts programs in the city. The many program subjects include environmental justice, art education, and restorative justice.
