STERIS PLC, a leading global provider of products and services that support patient care with an emphasis on infection prevention, recently announced that Dr. Esther M. Alegría is a new member of the company's board of directors.

Mohsen Sohi, chairman of STERIS, pointed out in a statement:

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Alegría to our Board. She brings over three decades of experience in the biopharmaceuticals industry to our Board and will be a valuable addition.

Through her research efforts, Alegría brings experience in global drug development, manufacturing operations, regulatory strategies, licensing/de-licensing/M&A, as well as creating a winning culture of innovation and strategic growth.

Alegría’s Career 

Alegría is the founder and CEO of APIE Therapeutics, a pioneer in microvascular repair and regeneration, where she leads a team focused on developing therapeutic medicines to treat chronic and debilitating diseases.

Prior to APIE, Alegría was president and senior executive advisor at Catalyst Excel & Advance, an advisory firm that provides operational guidance to senior executives working to launch new pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies.

Esther has depth experience in drug development, manufacturing operations, and building effective/productive organizations (local/global) and leaders,” notes her LinkedIn profile.

Prior to Catalyst, Alegría held positions of increasing responsibility at Biogen, Inc., most recently as senior vice president of Global Manufacturing, where she was directly involved in the successful advancement of various vaccine/therapeutic drug development, from R&D to commercialization.

A Respected Leader

Alegría currently serves on the public board of directors for Avid Bio, where he focuses on the strategic landscape of manufacturing technologies, capacity utilization and growth, organizational designs, productivity, and is a member of the governance and audit committees.

She is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the PR Science Trust, where she focuses on economic growth and technological advances, as well as chair of the Governance Committee.

“Esther has lent her expertise to key industry, education and advocacy groups including serving on the Advisory Board for NC Biosciences Org, Global MFG BioPhorum Org, NC Biotech Training and Education Center, and the American Chamber of Commerce Denmark,” highlights her profile. 

Alegría, who has a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Hawaii and a certification in executive business management from Harvard Business School, has also been noted for her influence in nonprofit organizations, such as the Biogen Foundation and Shepherd Care Medical Clinic, where she became president of both.

Business NC Magazine selected Alegría in 2009 as 'Woman Extraordinaire of the Year' for being an influential leader within her company and for her impact on economic success.
