For the first time, the University of California has admitted more in-state Latino students into their freshman class than whites.

According to a report by the Los Angeles Times, 28.8 percent of those admitted to at least one University of California campus were Latino, compared to the 26.8 percent that are were white. Asian Americans still make up the largest ethnic group of admitted students from California with 36.2 percent, while African-American students admitted from California were a low 4.2 percent.

The individual University of California campuses that accepted more Latino than white students include UC Irvine, UC Riverside and UC Merced

California law forbids the use of affirmative action in public university admissions due to Proposition 209, which was passed in 1996. This year, lawmakers tried to reinstate affirmative action in California through constitutional amendment SCA 5, but it was put on hold because of objection from the Asian-American community.
