Bill Green, member of the School Reform Commission (SRC), a five-member group that oversees Philadelphia’s public schools, announced earlier today that he is suing Governor Tom Wolf in an effort to get back his post as chairman of the commission.

Last year, shortly after taking office, Wolf appointed Marjorie Neff, former principal at Masterman High School, as the new chairman of the SRC, replacing Green. 

Green had been appointed by then-Governor Tom Corbett to head the SRC and had given up his seat at Philadelphia City Council.

After his removal, Green said he understood the move to be illegal but he would not sue because he believed it would be a distraction to gain school funding, according to CBS Philly.

Today, Green said at a press conference that he would be filing suit in Commonwealth Court.

“Essentially, I don’t believe at this point that it’s going to be a distraction. The battle lines are fairly hardly drawn in Harrisburg,” Green said.

Green added that he believes he legally holds the position of SRC chair. Green said Monday that all five members of the SRC work well together and that he had talked to Neff on Sunday about his decision to file the suit. The SRC will take no position on the case, according to Philly.com.

“I have always maintained I’m chair, in public statements, with my fellow Commissioners, etc. And believe I’m chair today because as a matter of law the governor had no power to remove me,” Green told CBS Philly.
