The depressing reality of studying in Pennsylvania: Its grads have the highest student loan debt
Pennsylvania could be the worst state in the country to go to college if you have to ask for a student loan.
Pennsylvania could be the worst state in the country to go to college if you have to ask for a student loan. Graduates of universities in the state are loaded with some of the largest student debt in the United States, according to a study using data from the college information web, Peterson's.
Seventy-one percent of Pennsylvania's college students have an average of $32,528 in debt. Pennsylvania is third in the country for highest percentage of students in debt and also the third in highest student loan debt.
Nine of the top 20 public colleges with the highest student loan debt are in Pennsylvania: Mansfield University of Pennsylvania ($34,155), Temple University ($34,224), Pennsylvania State University ($35,430), University of Pittsburgh-Bradford ($34,604), University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown ($35,480), University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg ($35,700), Indiana University of Pennsylvania ($37,457) and Lincoln University of Pennsylvania ($39,206).
On the other hand, another university in Philadelphia, University of the Sciences, is the private school with the highest student loan debt in the United States. University of the Sciences students leave with an average debt of $71,370, although part of this is due to the fact that its graduates work in the field of health and have higher incomes to pay off the debt.
While students in the United States see the growing price of schools and the size of their student debt, other countries offer free higher education. Perhaps our students will move to Brazil, Germany, Finland, France, Norway, Slovenia or Sweden.
