The new biopic will recount the story and career of the Greek-American soprano Maria Anna Cecilia Sofia Kalogeropoúlou, known as María Callas, who is considered the most important opera singer of the 20th century.

The person in charge of bringing Callas's life to the big screen will be the Chilean screenwriter, producer and film director Pablo Larraín, one of the most prolific directors in Latin America and also known for having directed films like 'Jackie' about the life of the first lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy (2016) or 'Spencer' (2021) on Diana Princess of Wales also known as Lady Di.

The film 'María', considered the third in the trilogy of films starring women under the direction of Larraín, will feature the stellar performance of the renowned American actress Angelina Jolie. "I take Maria's life and legacy very seriously. I will give everything I can to rise to the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have admired for a long time. Having the opportunity to tell more of Maria's story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, it's a dream," Jolie said in a statement.

Larraín (Chile, 1976) is not only recognized in the film industry for 'Jackie' or 'Spencer' but also for his multi-award winning film 'Neruda'. 'Maria', however, will be the Latin director's first foray into opera, which makes him dizzy but also satisfying. “Having the opportunity to combine my two deepest and most personal passions, film and opera, has been a long-cherished dream. To do this with Angelina, an extremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift,”added the Latin American filmmaker.

According to the first press reports, the film 'María' will focus on a specific period in the life of María Callas: in the 1970s when she lived in Paris and far from the stage. The artist died in the same French capital in 1977, when she was only 53 years old, due to a heart attack.

The script for the film will be in charge of the British writer, screenwriter and film director Steven Knight, known for having been the creator of the famous television series 'Peaky Blinders' and who has already worked alongside Pablo Larraín in the film ' Spencer'.

The release date of ‘Maria’ is still to be determined; although filming is expected to begin in 2023.
