This 'biopic' will review the artist's life, and according to the film's tagline, will tell "the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world's greatest opera singer, revived and reimagined during her last days in Paris in the 1970s".
Larraín expressed his excitement at working on this project with the renowned actress, whom he described as "brave and curious".
"Doing it with Angelina is a fascinating opportunity. A real gift", he said in a statement.
Likewise, Angelina also told of her admiration for the Chilean. "Pablo Larraín is a director I have admired for a long time. To have the opportunity to tell more of Maria's story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream", Jolie told Variety.
The film will be produced by Fabula Pictures' Juan de Dios Larrain, along with Italy's Lorenzo Mieli (The Apartment Pictures) and Jonas Dornbach (Komlizen Film). In addition, "María" will be Larraín's reunion with "Spencer" screenwriter Steven Knight.
