The movie, a nostalgic comedy that shows a personal journey, stars Argentine actress Griselda Siciliani and Hispanic-Mexican Daniel Gimenez Cacho, as announced by the streaming platform, which acquired the rights to the film. The cast also includes Íker Sanchez Solano, Andrés Almeida, and Leonardo Alonso.

"Bardo, or false chronicle of a few truths" recounts the life of a Mexican journalist who returns to his country to face his family, his memories and a new reality. "The character looks for answers in the past to reconcile who he is in the present," according to Netflix's statement.

The feature film, directed by four-time Oscar winner, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu, finished shooting in Mexico City last September and is currently in post-production.

The script for “Bardo” has been written by the same Mexican director and by the Argentine Nicolás Giacobone. Both had already worked together in films such as "Birdman" and "Biutiful".

Bardo is a cinematic experience that has inspired us to create a release strategy designed for the film to penetrate culture in the biggest and widest way. We will give film lovers everywhere the opportunity to experience the film through a global theatrical release and the film’s worldwide release on Netflix. Having known Alejandro for a long time, I am personally very excited to finally be able to work alongside him and to bring his film to a global audience.”, said Netflix Head of Global Film Scott Stuber in an interview with Deadline.

Netflix has not confirmed when "Bardo, false chronicle of a few truths" will be released in theaters or when it will be available on its platform. However, Hollywood sources estimate that the public will be able to see the new film by González Iñarritu by the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, to compete for the Academy Awards. The film will premiere first on the big screen and later in streaming. 

Netflix's aspiration is fueled after Apple TV+ production CODA won an Oscar for best film, which made it the first streaming platform to win a statuette in this category.
