In times of uncertainty and instability, there is no better news than listening to new music by Jorge Drexler. The Uruguayan songwriter, with his calm voice and sweet guitar chords, returns inspired with “Cinturón Blanco”, a single of the next album that he will release this April.

Since he published " La luz que sabe robar " in 1992, already has almost twenty studio albums in his discography. However, Drexler confessed that the pandemic times were the hardest vital and creative period of his career. Therefore, he now intends to bring a ray of hope and vitality to humanity with his new songs.

“Cinturón Blanco”, with a base of folk and pop without too many complications, talks about starting from scratch, looking for a new starting point among the pain that the world suffers. It is a metaphor based on martial arts: wearing a white belt means starting from the most basic level in karate or judo, to progressively reach the top and be crowned with the black belt. Then, start over.

Drexler advocates for chill out, cling to the person with whom one shares life, and evolve in common: “Rewind to that beginning, to the same precipice, by which we fell together. To start with you and me, from scratch, like so long ago, until they give us both the white belt again”,  says the chorus.

In addition to this awaited single, the artist revealed the list of ten songs that will form the new album. Among them, four include high level featuring’s: “El plan maestro” with Rubén Blades, “Oh, algoritmo!” with Noga Erez, “Tocarte” with C. Tangana, and “Bendito desconcierto” with Martín Buscaglia.

Regarding the experience of recording music with other artists, the Uruguayan singer made a positive assessment. “I discovered that you don't write alone. That until you share with another person, you are not able to measure the nature that you have composed”, he explained.

The video for “Cinturón Blanco” was directed by Joana Colomar, who also directed the video for “Tocarte” with C. Tangana. For the Uruguayan, the essential thing at this moment is “unlearn all our baggage to achieve excellence. With our wisdom and burden, try to be a beginner again.”

Few singers have won an Oscar: the Uruguayan won the statuette for best original song in 2005 for “Al otro lado del Río”, included in the movie “Diarios de motocicleta”. Drexler considers that composing is a moment of questioning, euphoria and depression. “Once you open a song, you have no choice but to finish it. If not, the sensation is coitus interruptus, it does not let you sleep”, he said in a recent interview.
