Survey: Utah and Southern states are most religious
Some states in Southern U.S. and Utah are the top 10 most religious states, according to a Gallup survey.
Some states in Southern U.S. and Utah are the top 10 most religious states, according to a Gallup survey.
Utah, the only non-Southern state at the top of the list, has the highest percent of residents that attend church weekly with 51 percent.
Residents of Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana and Arkansas (all southern states) are the next most likely to frequently attend church with 45 percent to 47 percent weekly attendance.
The bottom of the list includes Vermont, with 17 percent of residents attend weekly religious services, New Hampshire (20 percent), Maine (20 percent) and Massachusetts (22 percent).
So why is religion so prominent in the South?
“The strong religious culture in the South reflects a variety of factors, including history, cultural norms and the fact that these states have high Protestant and black populations -- both of which are above average in their self-reported religious service attendance,” Gallup said.
What about Utah?
“Utah's No. 1 position on the list is a direct result of that state's 59% Mormon population, as Mormons have the highest religious service attendance of any major religious group in the U.S,” according to Gallup.
