Pope Francis announced Sunday that a consistory would be held at the end of June to name five new cardinals, including auxiliary bishop of San Salvador, Monsignor Gregorio Rosa Chávez.

The other four new cardinals that are to be named on next June 28 are the Archbishop of Barcelona; the Archbishop of Bamako, (Mali ) Jean Zarbo; the Archbishop of Stockholm, Anders Arborelius; and the Vicar Apostolic of Pakse (Laos), Louise-Marie Ling Mangkhanekhoun, all of the under 80.

The fact that the five cardinals come from “diverse parts from the world,” expresses the “Catholicity of the church, diffused throughout the earth,” Pope Francis said, as reported in Crux Now.

According to Catholic media, the pick of Rosa Chávez, bypassing the titular archbishop, “says a lot about Francis”: Rosa Chávez was a close collaborator of  Archbishop Oscar Romero, murdered in 1980 while he was saying Mass.

Romero is “the icon of the Church Francis wants … a poor Church for the poor,” said Rosa Chavez in an interview with Vatican Radio in the days previous to the beatification of Romero.
