Two Peruvian artists on Wednesday created a huge colored chalk sidewalk painting inspired by Michelangelo's "La Pieta" in the atrium of a church in La Paz with the aim of promoting this type of little-known art in Bolivia.

Amador Quispe and Christhian Ventura put the finishing touches on their work on Wednesday after starting it the day before at San Francisco church using various colors of common school chalk and other materials.

"The theme of 'La Pieta' is a recurring one in the history of art, so we've been inspired by that to show the love of a mother for her son," Quispe told EFE.

The colorful work, which shows the Virgin Mary and Jesus, along with two cherubs on a celestial background, measures three meters (9.8 feet) long and four meters (13 feet) wide.

With the project, the Peruvians are hoping to promote pavement art in Bolivia.

"We noticed that in Bolivia sidewalk art is little known and people are astonished to see our works, so we want to promote it," he said.

Meanwhile, Quispe said that religious themes attract most people, "but sometimes people also criticize what we draw."

The young artists are planning to create a pair of murals in La Paz and in the eastern Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, and then they intend to head to Brazil to continue creating their street art.
