The agency that administers Peru's protected natural areas on Tuesday announced the discovery of a new type of orchid found in a park in the Andean nation's central jungle.

SERNANP said that the orchid was named Andinia tingomariana by the Department of Organismal Biology and Ecology, at Colorado College in the United States "in honor of the Tingo Maria National Park, where it was first found."

The institution also said that "this valuable contribution to the world was recorded as part of a research study" developed in 2017 by park ranger Emiliano Carrillo, in collaboration with volunteers Alex Gustavo Diaz, Enrique Yupanqui and Luis Antonio Ocupa.

"This important finding places value on the country's natural heritage and shows Tingo Maria National Park's good state of preservation," SERNANP said, adding that it is also "proof of this protected area's high research potential."

So far, as many as 81 research studies have been conducted at Tingo Maria National Park alone, and the results will be presented at the First National Convention of Scientific Research in National Parks, which will take place in Lima Sept. 26-28.
