"Coco", the Pixar film whose characters speak with a Mexican accent and makes almost everyone cry, was the winner of the Oscar for the best animated film, confirming that Mexico has conquered the Academy Awards this year. 

Set in the traditional Mexican Day of the Dead, "Coco" tells the story of Miguel, a young Mexican boy who wishes to be a musician. The story reinforces the value of Mexican culture, such as the importance of family and respect for ancestors, but also enhances some typically American values, like the importance of pursuing your dreams. Miguel is a stubborn child who must fight against the opposition of his family, that wants him to become a shoemaker instead of a musician. "Coco" also tells the story of a boy who grows ups and faces the problems of adulthood, such as accepting our origins and the meaning of life.

“With ‘Coco,’ we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do” , director Lee Unkrich said. “Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.”

Producer Darla K. Anderson gave a similar message to the audience: “‘Coco’ is proof that art can change and connect the world,” she said, “and this can only be done when we have a place for everyone and anyone who feels like an ‘other’ to be heard.”

Adrián Molina, co-director of the film, dedicated the Award  to the Latino community, while Anthony González, the boy who gives voice to the protagonist of the story, exclaimed: "Long live Mexico!", as reported by EFE.

The Pixar production also won the Oscar for best original song, "Remember me". The song was performed during the gala by Mexican actor Gael García Bernal, along with Natalia Laforucade and Mexican-american singer Miguel.

"Coco" has brought more than $730m worldwide, making it the second-highest-grossing animated feature of 2017, after "Despicable Me 3".
