Since March of this year, Kamala Harris has been in charge of immigration issues in the White House. This week, she announced her intention to visit the Central American region soon to "address the root causes" of migration, although she had not yet set a date.

Although the White House has not confirmed it, the stops between Mexico and Guatemala could be El Salvador or Honduras, since the majority of undocumented migrants in the United States are citizens of these countries.

The White House has confirmed through press releases and spokespersons that the border "is closed," and have warned that most of the people arriving without documents will be expelled from the country. Despite this, the immigration crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to reach record numbers. Harris will meet this coming Monday remotely with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei to discuss "how to work together to address the immediate relief needs of the Guatemalan people, as well as deepen cooperation on migration."

Following this meeting, Harris will participate in a meeting hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala, where she will meet with representatives of community organizations. The intent of this meeting is to bring to the table the importance of placing Guatemalan citizens at the center of solutions to the migration issue. At the last meeting, Harris and Giammattei have agreed to collaborate to create conditions that expand opportunities for people in their home countries as a measure to address it.

In recent months, the situation at the border has spiraled out of control, reaching overwhelming numbers of irregular migration from Central America. The Biden Administration has recognized the collapse of the processing system and is implementing new measures to control the border problem.
