On Tuesday, Nov. 30, Barcelona architect Oriol Bohigas died at the age of 95, after his health condition worsened. He has battled Parkinson's since 2015. The city of Barcelona, largely redesigned by the architect for the 1992 Olympic Games, is in mourning following his loss.

Bohigas redesigned and transformed the urban space of Barcelona, a city that had suffered a disorderly expansion during the post-war period. Founder of the architectural firm MBM Arquitectes with Josep Maria Martorell and David Mackay, he carried out more than 500 architecture, urban planning and design projects for the city over the last 45 years.

Bohigas has been distinguished and recognized for being in charge of the design of the Olympic Village for Barcelona 92 alongside McKay and Albert Puig Domenech, and for the Universal Exposition of Seville in 1992, for which he designed the Pavilion of the Future. 

Bohigas was also closely linked to the world of culture: he was a founding member of the publishing group Edicions 62, president of the Fundació and president of the Ateneu Barcelonés, as well as a member of the 'Gauche Divine' in Barcelona during the 1960s.

He was a professor at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Barcelona, and was elected director of the ETSAB in 1977, a position he held until 1980. He was appointed delegate of the Urban Planning Services of the Barcelona City Council and continued his career as an urban planning advisor to the city council. Responsible and promoter of the renovation of Barcelona that led to its election as host of the 1992 Olympic Games.

Urban planner, thinker and intellectual, he will be missed in the city where he was born and which he would eventually transform.
