White doves flew over the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City as thousands of fans bid farewell to Mexican comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños, known as “Chespirito,” as followers paid tribute and celebrated the legacy of the performer and screenwriter.

Many fans dressed in the costumes of the most iconic characters created by the comedian as mariachi performers were accompanied by cheers and applause from thousands of attendees, who filled about half the stadium which seats 100,000.

Gómez Bolaños died Nov. 28, at the age 85, in his house in Cancún, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. He began his career in television in 1968, but it wasn’t until 1970 that he would create two of his most iconic characters: “El chapulín colorado” and “El chavo del 8.”

His television show “Chespirito,” was on the air for 25 years and was broadcast in more than 25 countries, including Thailand and Russia.
