Using a network of shoppers in the area, Instacart employees pick up and deliver groceries from local stores such as Whole Foods and Costco.
The company filed for the ability to deliver alcohol with the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board and now have recently been approved. The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board offers home delivery of certain products, but it takes a few days longer than Instacart.
Pennsylvania is part of a minority of states that maintain state-run liquor stores with limited hours. Instacart makes it easier for consumers to access wine and liquor that is rarely sold in grocery stores.
Instacart started in San Francisco in 2012, and also offers services in Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago and Washington. They serve most of the Philadelphia and suburban areas west of the city, but not the far Northeast.
