An Associated Press reporter and freelance translator were killed while covering the conflict in Gaza on July 13, according to the news agency.
Italian video journalist Simone Camilli and Palestinian translator Ali Shehda Abu Afash were killed when engineers failed to neutralize a bomb believed to have been dropped in an Israeli airstrike onto Beit Lahiya on the Palestinian side.
The explosion killed five — including three police — and injured four, among them AP photographer Hatem Moussa.
Camilli, 35, had worked for the AP since 2005, covering the Gaza conflict since 2006. In its 168-year history, the AP has lost 33 staff members, one, Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed in gunfire in Afghanistan this year. Abu Afash, 36, had been a regular freelance translator for foreign media. Both had young daughters — Camilli a 3-year-old and Afash a 5 and 6-year-old.
In a war that has killed an estimated 1,900 Palestinians and 67 Israelis, Camilli is the first foreign journalist to have been killed.
