Uruguay is the perfect example of the fact that covering electrical necessities with clean energy is no longer a pipe dream but a reality. In 2014, 84 percent of the electricity produced in this country already proceeded from its own renewable resources such as wind, sun, rain or from the burning of agricultural crop waste.

In this same line, the International Airport of Carrasco in Montevideo, the nation’s capital, is on its way to becoming the first in the world capable of supplying itself only with green energy. “We support the project with full conviction”, said Ramón Méndez, national director of Energy in Uruguay. We believe that Carrasco becoming the first airport in the world supplied with clean energy is an excellent form of promotion for the country”, the Uruguay Secretary of Communications stated.

For such purpose, plans have been established to build a photovoltaic panel park to generate electricity from the sun’s rays, in an area located next to the airport. The plan includes the possibility using electrical buses to circulate inside the airport so as to avoid the use of fossil fuels.

Since 2008, Uruguay invests 3% of its annual GDP in changing its energy structure.
