Just in time for Hispanic Heritage Month, a new book series for kids captures historical Latina women that dared to break the stereotypes.

Author Nadia Fink decided to develop an illustrated book series that highlights the lives of iconic Latina women. “We wanted to break away from the stereotype of a woman whose beauty is only on the outside and show examples of women who have internal beauty,” Fink told BBC Mundo.

Known as the “Antiprincesas” (anti-princesses), the first historical Latina to be featured is Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

"We want to show that, in this globalized world and strongly colonized culture, we can create beautiful stories with real women, with real lives," she said to Huffpost Latino Voices.

The books are illustrated by Pitu and publisehd by Sudestada and Chirimbote. The second book is set to feature Chilean folksinger Violeta Parra. Juana Azurduy, a military leader and key in the Bolivian war, will be featured in the third installment.
