Brazilian writer and journalist Nélida Piñon has become the first author in Portuguese to enter La Caja de las Letras, a safe deposit box at the Cervantes Institute headquarters in Madrid, Spain. On Wednesday, Nov. 24, the author left a large collection of books, photographs and personal and family objects that summarize her literary career in Portuguese.

According to Luis García Montero, director of La Caja de las Letras, the space is now "an Ibero-American dimension."

Piñón just received her Spanish nationality, and delivered three works to La Caja de las Letras: the first edition of her opera prima Guía-mapa de Gabriel Arcanjo (1961), the manuscript of her novel La república de los sueños (1984) and her last published book, Un día llegaré a Sagres (One day I will arrive in Sagres).

One-thousand two hundred and sixty-on works and pieces were left by the author, and include photographs such as the one of the reception of the Prince of Asturias Award for Letters in 2005, some of her speeches in Spanish and other loose texts.

García Montero thanked the author for the "very generous bequest to Cervantes" for having donated her personal library to the Cervantes Center in Rio de Janeiro. According to Piñón, these are "traces that one leaves behind without realizing what one is doing."

Her legacy will finally reach the Cervantes heritage library at its headquarters in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid.
