Latinas also wanted their own team of avengers and vigilantes.

A la Brava is that kind of feminist superheroic lineup: Jalisco, Santa, Loquita, Ruca and Bandita are a modern team of Latina social justice warriors designed for a young audience.

The team is progressively expanded by the multifaceted Kayden Phoenix, with the agile and colorful drawing of Eva Cabrera -nominated for an Eisner Award- and Amanda Juliana Gonzalez.

So far Jalisco and Santa have appeared, explaining their Mexican roots and their superhero origins fighting injustice and gender inequality. Their day-to-day lives are explored, as well as folkloric elements such as dances - Jalisco is from Guadalajara and Santa lives in Texas.

The next issue to appear this year is Loquita, which will be followed by Ruca and Bandita. Loquita will be a superheroine with Puerto Rican and Cuban roots who will fight against the supernatural. Eva Cabrera is in charge of this issue along with Mexican colorist Adriana DLT and designer Sandra Romero.

Loquita's politically conscious approach to the subject of child suicides is shown in her fight against supernatural forces. This is a bid for diversity and representation - this time the heroine lives in Miami - as well as feminist politics.

"A big part of my life's purpose is to give voice to stories as multifaceted, atypical and diverse as the people we meet in the real world," explained the author about the project.

The first two issues are currently available online.
