Protesters block transfer of migrant children
Anti-immigrant protesters blocked three buses carrying 140 Central American migrants, mostly women and children, to a San Diego station on Tuesday to await deportation, Reuters reported.
The families and unaccompanied children had made the long journey from Guatemala, El Salvador or Honduras into Mexico, arriving in Texas, for the most part, where they were apprehended and held in overcrowded facilities.
This week, the group was transferred by plane to San Diego before the unmarked buses headed to Murrieta were blocked by protesters who claimed that the group of women and children held by U.S. Immigration and Custom Enforcement officials threatened their community’s safety. A smaller group of supporters were also present, according to local news San Diego 6. After 25 minutes of delay, the buses turned around to go back to San Diego.
This year, more than 47,000 immigrant children were taken into U.S. custody after crossing the border alone — twice as many as last year and more than the U.S. facilities are capable of handling. More than 30,000 minors were held in adult detention facilities. While most were older than the age of 15, dozens were under that age.
