Study Reveals Reggae and Soft Rock Reduce Stress in Dogs

A study conducted by the University of Glasgow, in collaboration with the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Scottish SPCA), has revealed that certain music genres, particularly reggae and soft rock, can significantly reduce stress levels in dogs. This finding offers new strategies to enhance the well-being of dogs, especially those in shelters who face anxiety due to separation from their owners or unfamiliar environments.

Study Design

Researchers exposed dogs at an adoption center in Dumbarton, Scotland, to various music genres, including reggae, soft rock, Motown, pop, and classical music. During these sessions, physiological and behavioral changes were assessed by measuring heart rate, cortisol levels, and observing postures and activities.

Key Findings

  • Musical Preferences:
Dogs showed a significant reduction in stress levels when listening to reggae and soft rock, spending more time lying down and less time standing during these genres.

  • Individual Variability:
Although there was a general preference for reggae and soft rock, responses varied between individual dogs, suggesting that, like humans, dogs may have personal musical preferences.

Implications for Animal Welfare

Incorporating music, especially reggae and soft rock, in settings like shelters could be an effective tool to reduce stress and improve the quality of life for dogs. Gilly Mendes Ferreira from the Scottish SPCA mentioned plans to implement customized playlists in Glasgow and Edinburgh centers, with the potential to expand this practice to other facilities in the future.

Future Considerations

This study opens the door to further research on how different music genres affect dogs and other species. Understanding individual preferences and specific responses could optimize the use of music as a therapeutic tool for animals under human care.

In summary, music—particularly reggae and soft rock—emerges as a promising strategy to alleviate stress in dogs, improving their overall well-being and helping them adapt to environments like shelters and temporary homes.
