People with heart disease are at a higher risk of developing mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and stress. This connection is a two-way relationship: mental health conditions can increase the likelihood of heart disease, and heart disease can worsen mental health.

One key reason for this connection is the physiological impact of stress and mental illness. Stress and depression increase levels of hormones like cortisol and adrenaline, which can raise blood pressure, heart rate, and inflammation, leading to greater strain on the heart. Over time, these effects increase the risk of developing heart conditions, such as heart attacks or coronary artery disease.

People struggling with mental health issues are more likely to adopt unhealthy habits, such as smoking, poor diet, or lack of physical activity, which further elevate their cardiovascular risks. Conversely, people with heart conditions are prone to developing mental health issues. For example, recovering from a heart attack or managing a chronic heart condition can cause emotional stress, anxiety about health, and fear of recurrence. This emotional toll can trigger or worsen depression, creating a harmful cycle where poor mental health further impairs heart recovery.
