A Spanish Research Team Unveils Cocoa’s Potential for Brain Health and Stress Reduction
A team of Spanish researchers, including experts from the University of Granada and the University of Málaga, has conducted a study exploring the effects of a cocoa-enriched diet on brain neuroplasticity, memory, and emotional regulation. Although the research was carried out on animal models, the findings offer promising perspectives for human health.
Cocoa and Brain Plasticity
Neuroplasticity is essential for maintaining good memory, adapting to new challenges, and recovering from brain damage. In an increasingly demanding world where stress and aging impact brain functions, incorporating high-quality cocoa into the diet could be an effective strategy for enhancing mental and cognitive health.
Among the key findings, the study demonstrated that consuming high-phenolic cocoa stimulates neurogenesis in the hippocampus, a crucial neuroplastic process responsible for generating new neurons, essential for memory and learning. Additionally, there was an observed increase in the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key protein for neuronal survival, dendritic growth, and synaptic plasticity. These results suggest that cocoa could be a valuable ally in preserving cognitive function.
Selection of Cocoa Samples
For this project, researchers selected seven cocoa powders available in the Spanish market, based on their nutritional and energy composition. Five alkalized and two non-alkalized cocoa powders were analyzed for their total phenolic content (TPC), procyanidins, methylxanthines, and antioxidant capacity.
The results revealed that non-alkalized cocoa contained significantly higher levels of TPC, procyanidins, and antioxidant activity compared to alkalized cocoa. Based on these findings, two types of cocoa were chosen for the preclinical study: one with high phenolic content (HPC) and one with low phenolic content (LPC).
Cocoa’s Effect on Memory and Stress
Beyond neurogenic enhancement, cocoa consumption also demonstrated significant effects on memory and stress regulation:
- In the object recognition test, designed to evaluate memory in mice, those that consumed the HPC cocoa diet achieved superior cognitive performance compared to those on a standard or LPC diet.
- Regarding emotional behavior, mice that consumed cocoa exhibited distinct responses in the forced swim test, a widely used tool for studying stress-related behaviors.
- Specifically, these mice showed greater immobility during the test, suggesting potential changes in stress management or energy efficiency utilization.
However, further studies are necessary to fully understand these findings and determine whether cocoa consumption significantly impacts stress response in humans.

Beyond being a culinary delight, cocoa is emerging as a natural ally for brain health. The phenolic compounds in cocoa have demonstrated the ability to stimulate neurogenesis, enhance memory, and improve emotional regulation, making it a valuable resource for tackling the challenges of modern life and preserving a sharp and healthy mind over time.
